December 18, 2009

Well the semester is done and I can finally relax.
This week has been very exciting. I did some more work on the Puffin grant, it's coming along nicely, right at 500 words, which is the max. I'll probably try to bring it down some.
But today was the topper. Brenna had to get the capitalist creative grant paperwork in, this is one of the biggies we work on. Basically I helped her get it in all in order while her and Deb finished up some of the narrative work. Basically I went through everything on the checklist, made sure we had it, then put it all in order. But it wasn't just filing work, there was easily 100 pages of work to keep in order, plus I had to look through our G drive and find several files, it was good practice though, it got me used to navigating our filing system and it freed Brenna up to get the narrative work done. Brenna actually asked me to do that for those 2 reasons, good learning experience. By the time I left at 2:30 it was almost all but done. Just a few signatures in important spots and Deb getting her part of the narrative finished, then making 5 copies of all of it and it was done.
I'm getting more comfortable in my role there and more confident that I'm actually helping out. Feels good.

December 11, 2009

This week went very well. I've been working on the Puffin Foundation grant for our new studio space. It's called Studio-X and will be the home of our New Playwright's Series, Studio X-hibition. We've been going over the grant guidelines and Puffin's mission statement to see if we fit in. I spent Tuesday and Thursday researching our neighborhood, the Passyunk Square area of South Philly. It appears as though we are lower middle-class, but not lower class. We do plan on starting theatre classes for kids and teens in the near future and renting out the space for community groups who have need for it.
Today I went through the list of our playwrights who are involved in the Studio-X program for next year. One of our playwrights fit the bill and I spent a good portion of today working on the first part of the Puffin grant. 2nd week there and I'm already writing.
I have to say that the people at Theatre Exile are great to work with. I'm enjoying myself and learning so much. Deb made a point to show me all the copies she had to make of a government grant paperwork. It seems as though they'll tell you to make a certain number of copies one time and then change how things are done the next. So you need to be on the look-out for that.
Deb also took me with her to the PEW foundation offices to drop off some paperwork, there was someone she was hoping to introduce me to, and she did. Fran(can't remember her last name). She is charge of the arts grants and Deb wanted me to meet her, in case I run into her again I can say hi.
Over all this was a great week at Theatre Exile.

December 5, 2009

So far I've had 2 days at Theatre Exile and I really love it so far. I work directly under Deborah(Deb) Block, Co-Artistic Director and Brenna Geffers, Artistic Associate. Brenna was an intern early this year and got hired on into her current position. Deb will be my main supervisor at Theatre Exile. The others I'll be working with are Bryan Clark, Managing Director and Tenley Bank, External Relations Director.
Deb explained that as a development intern my duties will be mainly to research and write grants. I will take lead in writing smaller grants with the assistance of herself and Brenna and also assist the both of them in writing larger grants. As needed I will also assist in writing and sending out fundraising letters.

Day 1 was quite exciting, Deb gave me the mini tour and explained a little more thoroughly what I would be doing. She also explained that their office is purposely designed so that everyone shares the space and is equally involved in the operation of the theater. This serves to create a more collaborative workspace. The only person who has their own office is Joe Canuso, the founder and producing artistic director. I haven't met Joe yet, he and his wife are out of the country for the month of December. After that Deb gave me some grants to read over and a copy of Theatre Exile's strategic plan.

Day 2 started late. Deb was a breakfast meeting and I waited until about 11 to start my day, normally it begins at 10. But that was fine. I got started right away with phoning the Puffin Foundation to make sure they received our request for an application. We had sent it to them over a month ago with a SASE. The deadline is Dec 30 so Deb was a little worried about our not receiving the application. It seems that our application got lost so they sent us new one, problem solved. Next I went to TD Bank's website to read up on their Community Grant. Last year TD Bank gave over 42 million dollars in grants in Canada and the US and Deb wanted to see if our new rehearsal space could qualify for a grant. We feel it does and are working on a plan to fit our grant request into their requirements. I am taking the lead on this grant. Very nervous but very excited.
